A Reflection on Teachers’ Day

On 5th September, which we celebrate as Teachers’ Day, I came across a video in my WhatsApp group of friends. The video was created by an Instagram influencer with more than 64,000 followers. It throws a dark shade towards the role of teachers. But I felt it was one-sided. It overlooked the deeper value and contribution of teachers in our society. It is easy to criticise any profession. Every profession has both strengths and weaknesses. Teaching is no exception. There is a lot of scope to improve. But the role of teachers goes far beyond academics. They shape personalities. They nurture values. They guide students during crucial stages of life. This role becomes even more important during higher education years, between 18 and 25. Bengaluru "Least Liveable" ?

I remember ARD sir (Former Professor at DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute) talking about the state of research and development. He used to say most of the research is politically motivated and intends to harm or loot the people. A fraction of research is indeed for welfare. Indexes are no exception. Many so-called global indexes are either following the path of majority of the research or critically lacking in their methodology. In the present context, The Global Liveability Index's generalisation seems flawed. The index ranks 172 global cities based on five parameters(weightage in %): Stability(25%), Healthcare(20%), Culture & Environment(25%), Education(10%), and Infrastructure(20%). There are many questions about the methodology of this index. The first question is what is the basis of the weightage for each parameter.  Ranking requires a benchmark, and the claim of ranking highly relative aspects such as culture seems far-fetched. शशि थरूर और महुआ मोइत्रा विपक्ष की प्रखर आवाज हैं। अधिकांश मुद्दों पर उनके विचार प्रगतिवादी होते  हैं, परंतु काली फिल्म के संदर्भ में उनकी राय उचित नहीं प्रतीत होती। विभिन्न संस्कृतियों में काली के भिन्न भिन्न रूपों की उपासना निर्विवाद है, काली के मांसाहार और मद्यपान के रूप की कल्पना भी संभव है। किंतु काली को माता मानने वाले लोग भी तो हैं, एकबार उनके बारे में भी सोच लीजिए। आस्था और मनोरंजन दो भिन्न विषय हैं। आस्था और मनोरंजन अथवा फ्रीडम ऑफ स्पीच के मध्य में एक लकीर का होना आवश्यक है। आपकी फ्रीडम ऑफ स्पीच यदि अनेक लोगों को कष्ट पहुंचाकर  संतृप्त होती है तो आप सेडिस्ट (sadist) हैं। लोगों के काली के प्रति विरोध को एक और उदाहरण से समझते हैं, वर्ष 1983 में आई एक फिल्म (किसी से मत कहना, निर्देशक: ऋषिकेश मुखर्जी) जिसमें पटकथा की रोचकता के लिए हनीमून होटल को हनुमान होटल बना दिया गया था। वर्ष 2018 में उसी दृश्य का उद्धरण लेकर ऑल्ट न्यूज़ के पत्रकार जुबैर ने मोदी से पहले के प्रधानमंत्रियों के कार्यकाल को हनीमून और मोदी के कार्यकाल को हनुमान बताते हुए ट्वीट कर दिया। भारत के अनेक बहुस...

A Casual Visit

Recently, on June 4th 2022, I got a chance to visit my friend Anand Kumar Singh at his home, which is located in Singhpur village of Payagpur Tashsil, District Baharaich. We had planned to meet in Delhi, his temporary address, when he was preparing for the UPSC civil services exam. But since in the recent development he got Rank 206 in UPSC 2021 and secured the position for IAS, also he was very much demanded by his natives consequently he had to return to his home at Baharaich, and as pre-planned, I went to meet him at his home. My home is at Malikpur Nonara Village of Kadipur Tahsil, District Sultanpur. Even though We both belong to the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh, it is not so easy to travel to each other's homes using public transport. Our houses are around 200 Kms far from each other, but it took about 7-8 hours for me to reach his home this time.
